Winter guard is a co-ed activity that promotes teamwork through the use of flag, rifle, and saber unites as they march and perform to music while on a gym floor.

It is a combination of music, artistry, drama, dance moves, and athleticism as students simultaneously work to communicate a themed message through skilled performance.

Students in winter guard will learn specific skills designed to reflect this sport as well as cooperative skills they will need for life in general.

For GCA, winter guard would mean students from 6th-12th grade are eligible to participate in this activity, representing our school Academic requirements, the same as those involved in athletics, still hold true for winter guard members.

In addition to learning the skills specific to winter guard, GCA's purpose is also to be salt and light to those around us as we will perform to Christian music and reflect a Christ-like theme in our performance shows. We will also be a witness to those the competitions both fellow winter guard groups and spectators.

I am looking at practices two - three days a week (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday). At first, I will meet with the flags only on one day, rifles only on another, and everyone together the third. As the season progresses, it may become necessary to meet with everyone the three days per week. Practice times are tentatively scheduled for 3:30-5:00 p.m. after school.

The winter guard competition season begins in late January and runs through the end of March. I anticipate the group compete in three area competitions and state championships. These competitions will be held on Saturdays at high schools in Central and northern Ohio.

There will be an activity fee for each student to pay. This is in line with other sporting activities here at GCA. Also, students will need to purchase his/her own flag or rifle to practice with. I will have information about this during the parent/student meeting. Students are being asked to have a physical done before the beginning of the school year next year, per our athletic director.
